What is the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is designed to help divers improve their skills and gain invaluable experience. This engaging program involves five dives: two mandatory dives—Deep and Underwater Navigation—and three other dives of your choice tailored to your interests. Here is what you can choose from:

Upon certification as an advanced scuba diver, you’ll be qualified to dive up to 30 metres deep (or 21 metres if under 15). Imagine visiting even more dive sites on Sodwana Bay’s famous 2 Mile Reef and exploring further reefs, including the enchanting 6 Mile, 7 Mile, and 9 Mile Reefs. These are just a few of the perks of becoming an advanced scuba diver!

Course Itinerary Example

The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is typically completed in three days, with sessions divided between the morning and afternoon to ensure a balanced and enriching experience. This approach allows you to build on your existing knowledge while exploring the vibrant underwater landscapes at Sodwana Bay.

Morning
Kickstart your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course with a refreshing refresher session to warm up your diving skills, followed by your first exhilarating adventure dive. This initial dive will re-familiarize you with the underwater environment and set a solid foundation for the coming days of exploration.

Afternoon
After your morning dive, we’ll move on to Knowledge Reviews. Here, you’ll dive deeper into essential diving theory, ensuring you have the knowledge needed to tackle more challenging dives in the coming days.

Morning
Start your day with adventure dives 2 and 3. These dives are designed to enhance your skills, expand your understanding of underwater navigation, and increase your comfort at greater depths. The experience will solidify your path toward your advanced scuba diver certification.

Afternoon
Continue with Knowledge Reviews in the afternoon, reinforcing the intricate details and safety protocols essential for becoming a proficient advanced diver. These sessions are crucial for building a comprehensive understanding of scuba diving.

Morning
Prepare for the ultimate adventure with adventure dives 4 and 5. These final dives will push your boundaries and give you the chance to explore new depths and terrains, culminating in the significant milestone of becoming an advanced scuba diver.

Afternoon
Conclude your journey with the final Knowledge Reviews and get certified. By the end of the day, you will have earned your sought-after advanced scuba diver certification. Celebrate this achievement and get ready to explore the underwater world with newfound skills and confidence.

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Requirements

If you’re excited to join us as a PADI Open Water Scuba Diver, you’ll need to meet a few important requirements to ensure your safety and readiness:

Age Requirements

  • Participants must be at least 12 years old. Divers younger than 15 will be certified as PADI Junior Advanced Open Water Diver, and are limited to a maximum depth of 21m, while having to dive with a parent/guardian.
  • At 15 years old, students will automatically become a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, and be able to dive to 30m with any other adult certified diver.

Swimming Ability

  • Basic swimming skills and comfort in the water are necessary. You must be comfortable in the water and able to tread water for 10 minutes and swim 200 metres.

Medical Fitness

  • A ‘fit to dive’ medical certificate is required if you answer “yes” to any questions on the PADI Medical Form. This certificate, signed by a doctor within the last 12 months, ensures your health and safety during dives.

Parental Consent

  • For those under 18, a parent or guardian must complete and sign the necessary paperwork.

  • 4 nights in a Safari Tent (bring your own bedding). If you wish, you can upgrade your accommodation for an additional cost.

What’s Excluded

While the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver Program with Coral Divers is comprehensive, certain items are not included in the package:

  • A daily KZN Wildlife conservation fee applies.
  • There is a daily entry fee for accessing the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
  • Meals are not included; please book meals separately if needed. You can also make use of our fully equiped self-catering kitchen facility.
