What is PADI Discover Scuba Diving?

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving course offers a unique opportunity to experience scuba diving without needing certification. This one-day program is perfect for individuals who are short on time and want to make the most out of their vacation.

Under the direct supervision of a PADI Dive Instructor, you’ll dive to a maximum depth of 12 metres, applying the knowledge and skills learned during the course. The program emphasises enjoyment and safety, teaching you to use scuba gear properly and practising basic diving skills in shallow water.

This experience helps you decide if scuba diving is for you, all while ensuring you understand essential diving safety protocols.

Course Itinerary Example

The PADI Discover Scuba Diving course follows a well-structured itinerary designed to provide a comprehensive and enjoyable introduction to scuba diving.

Your day begins with a thorough orientation that covers the basics of scuba diving. You’ll watch an instructional video and participate in a brief classroom session where your instructor will explain the key concepts of diving, safety procedures, and the equipment you’ll be using.

Following the orientation, you’ll head to a pool or confined water area for your first underwater experience. During this session, your instructor will teach you how to use the scuba gear, practise essential diving skills such as breathing through a regulator, and ensure you feel comfortable underwater. This is a great opportunity to get familiar with the sensations of diving in a controlled environment.

Once you’re comfortable with the equipment and basic skills, it’s time for the real adventure—your open-water dive! Accompanied by your instructor, you’ll dive at the renowned 2-mile reef, where you’ll experience the beauty of the underwater world and encounter various marine creatures. You’ll also have the chance to practise your skills in a real diving environment.

After your dive, you’ll participate in a debriefing session where you can share your experiences, ask questions, and receive feedback from your instructor. Although the PADI Discover Scuba Diving course is not a certification course, you’ll receive a certificate of participation, and this experience can count toward your PADI Open Water Diver certification if you choose to pursue further training.

Who Can Participate?

Our PADI Discover Scuba Diving program is open to anyone who meets the following eligibility criteria

Your Age

  • Participants must be 10 years of age or older. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must complete and sign the necessary paperwork.

Your Health

  • All participants need to complete the PADI Medical Statement. If you answer “yes” to any of the questions, you must obtain medical clearance signed by a doctor. The medical clearance must be valid within 12 months, and the doctor cannot be the individual themselves.

Your Swimming Skills

  • Basic swimming skills are required for this course. You don’t have to be an expert swimmer, but you should be comfortable in the water.

What’s Excluded

Our course price does not cover several additional fees. Here’s a list of items that you will need to pay for separately:

  • Daily KZN Wildlife fee
  • MPA permit for divers
  • iSimangaliso Park Gate Entry fee

Upon completing your PADI Discover Scuba Diver course, you’re perfectly positioned to continue to a Scuba Diver or Open Water Diver course. These courses provide you with a full certification, boosting your confidence and abilities as a diver.

The transition to becoming a fully qualified diver takes approximately 3-5 days, depending on the course you choose. With full certification, you’ll enhance your diving skill set and become eligible for advanced courses such as the PADI Advanced Diver and Rescue Diver courses.
